Go Back

You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'

Words & Music by Barry Mann, Cythia Weil

Lyrics:

You never close your eyes
Anymore when I kiss your lips
There's no tenderness
Like before in you fingertips
You're trying hard not to show it,
But baby, baby I know it

You've lost that lovin' feelin', oh that lovin' feelin'
You've lost that lovin' feelin', now it's gone, gone, gone

There's no tenderness in your eyes
When I reach out for you
Girl, you're starting to critisize
Every little thing I do
It makes me just feel like crying
'Cause baby, something beautiful's dying

You've lost that lovin' feelin', oh that lovin' feelin'
You've lost that lovin' feelin', now it's gone, gone, gone

Baby, baby, I get down on my knees for you
If you would only love me like you used to do
We had a love, love, love, love affair every day
Oh don't, don't, don't, don't take it away
Listen to me, talkin' to you

Bring back that lovin' feelin, oh, that lovin' feelin'
Bring back that lovin' feelin, now it's gone, gone, gone

More info:
Soon after producer Phil Spector bought the Righteous Brothers' contract from Moonglow Records, he flew husband-and-wife songwriters Barry Mann and Cythia Weil out to California to write a hit song for his new singers. Mann and Weil wrote a tune based on their favorite record at the time, the Four Tops', Baby I Need Your Loving. Spector helped them write the bridge. You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' (Philles 124) was released in late 1964. In February 1965, it hit number one (for two weeks) on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and #3 on the rhythm & blues chart. Sales of over one million copies were quickly achieved. In 1969 Dionne Warwick did a cover version of You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' (Scepter 12262) that did quite well, reaching #16 on the Hot 100 chart. Two years later, Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway had moderate success with their rendition (Atlantic 2837).

Elvis sang You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' in concert in the 1970's. In the 1970 documentary Elvis - That's The Way It Is, Elvis was seen rehearsing the song at the International Hotel in Las Vegas and later singing it in concert on August 14, 1970.
