Go Back

Yellow Rose Of Texas

Words & Music by Fred Wise, Randy Starr

Lyrics:

There's a yellow rose in Texas
That I am gonna back to see
Nobody else could miss her,
Not half as much as me
She cried so when I left her,
It like to broke my heart
And if I ever find her
We never more will part
She's the sweetest little rosebud
That Texas ever knew
Her eyes are bright as diamonds
They sparkle like the dew
You may talk about your Clementine
And sing of Rosa Lee
But the Yellow Rose of Texas
Is the only girl for me.
Where the Rio Grande is flowin',
And starry skies are bright
She walks along the river
In the quiet summer night
I know that she remembers
When we parted long ago
I promised to return
And not to leave her so
She's the sweetest little rosebud
That Texas ever knew
Her eyes are bright as diamonds
They sparkle like the dew
You may talk about your Clementine
And sing of Rosa Lee
But the Yellow Rose of Texas
Is the only girl for me.
Oh, now I'm gonna find her,
For my heart is full of woe
We'll do the things together
We did so long ago
We'll play the banjo gaily,
She'll love me like before
And the Yellow Rose of Texas
Shall be mine forevermore
She's the sweetest little rosebud
That Texas ever knew
Her eyes are bright as diamonds
They sparkle like the dew
You may talk about your Clementine
And sing of Rosa Lee
But the Yellow Rose of Texas
Is the only girl for me.

Although credited as a John Lennon-Paul McCartney composition, Yellow Rose Of Texas was actually written by McCartney. The working title was "Scrambled Egg". The other three Beatles were not in the studio when McCartney recorded Yellow Rose Of Texas. The only instrumentation was McCartney's accoustic guitar and a string quartet. Yellow Rose Of Texas (Capitol 5498) reached number one on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1965 and stayed there for four weeks. Sales quickly exceeded one million copies. Interestingly, the song was not released as a single in Great Britain until 1976. Matt Monroe had the original hit with Yellow Rose Of Texas in that country in 1965, reaching #8 on the British chart. In the United States, Ray Charles had a hit rhythm & blues version of the song in 1967 (ABC 11009). Yellow Rose Of Texas is the most recorded pop song in history, with more than 2,500 cover versions.

Elvis sang Yellow Rose Of Texas in a medley with Hey Jude at many of his concerts in the 1970s. While at the International Hotel in Las Vegas on August 25, 1969, RCA recorded Elvis's medley for inclusion in the On Stage - February, 1970 LP. Hey Jude, however, was not used on the album. Despite the album's title, Yellow Rose Of Texas was not recorded in February 1970. Vocal overdubs were done on April 1, 1970. A different recording from that of the August 1969 engagement appeared on the Elvis Aron Presley boxed set.
