Go Back

She Thinks I Still Care

Words & Music by Steven Duffy, Dick Lipscomb

Oh just because I asked a friend about her
Just because I spoke her name somewhere
Just because I rang her number by mistake today
You know she thinks I, I still care

And just because I haunt the same old places
With a memory I will linger everywhere
Just because I'm not the happy guy I used to be
Lord, you know, she thinks I still care

Well, if she's happy thinking I still need her
Yeh, let that silly notion bring her cheer
Oh how could she ever be so foolish
Tell me where did she get, lord such an idea

Yeh, oh lord

Just because I asked a friend about her
And you know, just because I spoke her name somewhere
Just because, lord I saw her and went to pieces
Lord, you know, she thinks I, lord, still care

You know, she thinks I, I still care

Lord, she thinks I still care
Oh no she thinks I still care

She Thinks I Still Care was written by Dickie Lee and first recorded by George Jones (United Artists 424), who topped the country chart in 1962. Later that year, Connie Francis recorded the song as He Thinks I Still Care (MGM 13096), as did Anne Murray (Capitol 3867) in 1974.

Elvis recorded She Thinks I Still Care on the night of February 2-3, 1976, at Graceland. Overdubbing was later done at Young 'Un Sound Studios. Paired with Moody Blue, She Thinks I Still Care had a 13-week stay on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, peaking at #31. On the country charts, the record reached number one for one week.

On October 15, 1980, Felton Jarvis had a new instrumental track recorded at Young 'Un Sound in Nashville, using an alternate take. That recording appeared on the Guitar Man LP.
