Oh Happy Day

Words & Music by Philip Doddridge

Lyrics:

Oh happy day, oh happy day
When Jesus washed, oh when He washed
When Jesus washed, He washed the sins away (oh happy day), Oh happy day

Oh happy day, oh happy day
When Jesus washed, oh when He washed
When Jesus washed, He washed the sins away (oh happy day), Oh happy day

(Chorus)
He taught me how to watch and pray, watch and pray
and we'll rejoice everyday, everyday

Oh happy day, oh happy day
When Jesus washed, oh when He washed
When Jesus washed, He washed the sins away (oh happy day), Oh happy day

More info:
Oh Happy Day was written by Philip Doddridge in the 1700s and revised by E. F. Rimbault about a hundred years later. The song was popularized in 1968 by the Edwin Hawkins Singers, who featured Dorothy Morrison singing lead. Their recording (Pavilion 20001) reached #4 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and #2 on the rhythm and blues chart. Sales of over three million copies have been claimed. The Edwin Hawkins Singers' version of Oh Happy Day was awarded a Grammy for Best Soul Gospel song of 1969. Glen Campbell made another popular recording of Oh Happy Day (Capitol 2787) in 1970.

Elvis never recorded Oh Happy Day, but he did sing it in concert on occasion and rehearsed it for his 1968 TV special.
