Johnny Mercer and Rube Bloom wrote Fools Rush In in 1940 based on the melody of Bloom's Shangri-La. The song was first popularized by Glenn Miller in a recording on the Bluebird label (Bluebird 10728) that reached #3 on the charts in 1940. That same year Frank Sinatra with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra recorded a version of the song (Victor 26593). Other popular versions include those by Brook Benton (Mercury 71722), whose recording was a #5 rhythm & blues hit in 1960; Ricky Nelson (Decca 35133), who reached #12 on the Hot 100 chart in 1963; and Etta James (Ango 5424) in 1962. The full title of the song is Fools Rush In (Where Angels Fear to Thread).

Elvis recorded Fools Rush In at RCA's Nashville studios on May 18, 1971. His arrangement was based on Ricky Nelson's arrangement (James Burton played lead guitar on both Ricky Nelson's and Elvis's recordings of Fools Rush In).
