Songs for this album were recorded at RCA's Nashville studios in March and April 1960. It's been reported that demonstration records for some of the songs were produced by Phil Spector. No song titles were listed on the original album jacket. Instead, the titles were printed on a yellow sticker that was affixed to the front cover. Later pressings had the titles printed directly on the jacket. Elvis is Back opened up like a book. Bonus photos were contained inside. A few copies of this album had a civilian photo of Elvis on the back. According to RCA, sales of Elvis is Back surpassed $1 millin.

Elvis is Back had a 56-week stay on Billboard's Best Selling LPs chart, peaking at #2 (for three weeks).
