You're The Only Star In My Blue Heaven

Words & Music by Gene Autry

Lyrics:

You're the only star in my blue heaven
And I'm waiting just for you
You're the only star in my blue heaven
And in dreams your face I see

Well you're the guiding light
That brightens up the night
And I see your face in my dreams
You're the only star in my blue heaven
And I'm waiting just for you

Back in the mid-1930's, while Gene Autry was appearing on The Old Barn Dance radio show, he began receiving love letters from a woman in Iowa. After several months, the woman's doctor wrote to Autry and told him she was mentally disburbed. The physician requested Autry write to her and tell her that he was not at all interested in her romantic overtures. In the last letter Autry received from the woman, she described being alone. After hearing Autry on the radio, she walked outside and stared at the night sky. She wrote: "I looked at the stars in the heavens. I saw millions of them, but you're the only star in my blue heaven." That line inspired Autry to write the song You're The Only Star in My Blue Heaven. His recording (Conqueror 9098) was released in December 1935. Roy Acuff had a popular 1936 recording of the song (ARC 7-04-51). Autry sang the song in his movie, The Old Barn Dance (1938).

You're The Only Star in My Blue Heaven was one of the songs sung during the Million-Dollar-Quartet session on December 4, 1956. Jerry Lee Lewis sang a solo with his own piano accompaniment.
