Stay Away was written by Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett, who based the song on the melody of Greensleaves. Greensleeves was supposedly written by England's King Henry VIII. In 1952 Mantovani made a successful recording of Greensleeves (London 1171), as did the Beverly Sisters (London 1703) in 1957, and Mason Williams (Warner Bros. 7272) in 1969.

Elvis recorded Stay Away on October 2, 1967, at RCA's Nashville studios. It was sung over the opening credits of Elvis's 1968 movie Stay Away, Joe. His single release had a five-week stay on the Hot 100 chart, peaking at #67. Stay Away reportedly sold over a million copies worldwide.
