Pledging My Love

Words & Music by Don Robey, Ferdinand Washington

Lyrics:

Forever my darling our love will be true
Always and forever I'll love only you

Just promise me darling
Your love in return
May this fire in my soul dear
Forever burn

My heart's at your command dear
To keep, love and to hold
Making you happy's my desire
Keeping you is my goal

Forever I'll love you
For the rest of my days
I'll never part from you
Or your loving ways

Just promise me darling
Your love in return
May this fire in my soul dear
Forever burn

My heart's at your command dear
To keep, love and to hold
Making you happy's my desire
Loving you is my goal

Forever I'll love you
For the rest of my days
I'll never part from you
Or your loving ways

Just promise me darling
Your love in return
May this fire in my soul dear
Forever burn

More info:

Pledging My Love was written by Ferdinand Washington and Don Robey and originally recorded by Johnny Ace (Duke 136) in late 1954. Ace's single release was a number one rhythm & blues hit and a top twenty (#17) hit on the Best-Selling Singles chart. His record had just been released when he committed suicide by playing Russian Roulette on Christmas Eve 1954. Other releases through the years include those by Teresa Brewer (Coral 61362) in 1955, Roy Hamilton (Epic 9294) in 1958, Johnny Tillotson (Cadence 1377) in 1960, Laura and Johnny (Silver Fox 1) in 1969, and Kitty Wells (Decca 32840) in 1971.

Elvis recorded Pledging My Love at Graceland on the night of October 29-30, 1976. The instrumental track and overdubbing were done at Creative Workshop in Nashville on January 22 or 23, 1977. Paired with Way Down, Pledging My Love displaced Charlie Rich's Rolling with the Flow at number one on the country chart in August 1977. After only one week at the top spot, it was itself replaced by Chrystal Gayle's Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue. The total chart stay was 17 weeks.
