Go Back

I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen

Words & Music by Traditional - arranged Elvis Presley

I'll take you home again Kathleen
Across the ocean wild and wide
To where your heart has ever been
Since first you were my bonny bride
The roses all have left your cheek
I watch them fade away and die
Your voice is soft when ere you speak
And tears bedim your lovely eyes
Oh, I will take you home Kathleen
To where your heart shall feel no pain
And when the fields are soft and green
I will take you to your home Kathleen

Thomas Estendorf wrote I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen in 1876. He was inspired to write the song while his wife (whose name was Jennie) was away visiting relatives. Estendorf based his tune on Barney, Take Me Home Again by Arthur W. French and George W. Brown. I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen was the theme song of the radio series Orphans of Divorce, and was a particular favourite of Thomas Alva Edison's. As a matter of fact, the song was played at his funeral in 1931. I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen has been recorded by several artists over the years, including Will Oakland (Edison Ambersol 1102) in 1912, Walter Van Brunt (Edison 80160) in 1916, and Slim Whitman (Imperial 8310), whose version went to # 93 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1957.

Elvis recorded I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen on May 19, 1971, at RCA's Nashville studios.
